Janene Holzberg from The Baltimore Sun wrote a nice story about the Rockburn 'Cross race. It's in the Howard County section of today's (11/6/08) paper. Nice photos too, including the one of Thor and I posted above. You can check out the story & photos here. The word is getting out. Cyclocross is taking off.

Charm City 'Cross 2008
The race went well this year.
A few hiccups (like not enough beer) that will be fixed next year.
Great teamwork to make it happen.
Like always, the day was a blur but what I saw looked good.
Like always, I felt like crap warming up and raced pretty well.
Big thanks to Chris Newell for the encouragement and the pull's.
We were working together to move up and both feeding off the cheers for "Chris".
Burritos = good fuel
Thor loved the lil' Belgians race. In fact, we had a hard time getting him off the course. 8-)

Form is coming around
Thor's form is coming around. After watching a few stages of the Tour he's working on his victory salute.
In his words, "When I get older I will wear a green jersey and ride a big bike." He can also pick out big Thor in the peloton the way some kids can name all the "Thomas" trains.
My legs are starting to feel pretty good too...not fast yet, but strong. The motivation is high and I'm getting the work done.
If I could only heal up from my crash at the 12 Hours of Cranky Monkey I'd be happy. My hand and shoulder are still somewhat jacked up but they're not keeping me off the bike.
I'm just glad the 'cross doesn't happen during the Summer because breathing hot humid air while riding hard is no fun. I'm getting most of my rides in on dawn patrol so that helps.

time is an illusion
Waking up before the rooster to ride is easy to do so that I can hang out with these guys after work.
from spitting up to sitting up...
to rocking our world! ;-)
Gonna be toughening up the gearing on Rita for Baker's Dozen.
From 32x19 currently to 34x18 or maybe even 34x17. Whatever it takes to justify all the chains I stocked up on recently.
I'll be in the SS Solo field with a goal of more laps than beers. My ass will tell me when it's time to stop riding and start drinking. That should be a win-win for me.
Back at it tomorrow morning. Wheels rolling sometime before 5:30am. Gigglewatts, donut stress scores, functional lighting threshhold, and all the other fancy bike riding buzzwords.
Coffee is my friend.

I'm the dude, man
At dinner last night we heard a new one.
"Holy crap! That's a big green bean"
Another recent addition is "Dude".
Kids are like sponges.

tough sledding
Wednesday and Thursday I rode dawn patrol. Hitting the trails before work makes waking up at 4:50am amazingly attractive. The legs were not so good each day, but perhaps not having anything to eat is to blame. Though I was moving slow I was still very happy to be out in the woods on my bike.
Both rides were fun. Good company, conversation, trash talk, and even a few laughs courtesy of W going for a swim in an icy creek...the same creek that I dunked it in last month.
The snow hit yesterday. Unfortunately, it was a wet snow and the temperatures stayed right around freezing so conditions for a snow ride were (and remain) decidedly sub-optimal. I'm hoping for good conditions Sunday morning when things should be frozen solid. Hopefully, it will be frozen snow and not a layer of ice. We'll see. Low tire pressure and Advil will likely be the themes of the day.
Yesterday, I took advantage of the weather to slide out of work early so that Thor and I could play in the snow. It was so much fun. I felt like a little kid and he IS a little kid so we did all the cool things that little kids do in the snow. Sledding, rolling giant snow boulders, snowball fight, snow angels, learning to eat only the non-yellow snow, and even some shoveling.

da boyz
This photo of the boys was taken back in September. I just came across it again while doing some organizing on flickr and I dig it.
So...I've been enjoying the beer and the cookies of the season and not riding. It's only been 10 days and I'm ready to get back on the bike. I know that it's good to take a break, but I get stiff and sore when I don't ride...and cranky too. I'm going to have to saddle back up soon (like maybe tomorrow morning) just for sanity's sake and to lessen the guilt of drinking a beer every night.
Last night we hit Pub Dog with some friends for Pizza and Beer. Dang it was good. Gotta love a place that brings out 2 beers every time your order 1. Best part was Thor dancing, playing shuffleboard, and generally entertaining the entire bar after dinner.
He didn't want to leave.
Tonight the plan is to put some white bar tape on the fixie. Nothing says pimp hand like riding a fixed gear bike with white bar tape at 5:30 in the morning in December. Or something like that.
